Rescued & Retired Greyhound Owners Network RRGON is a loose network of likeminded individuals, rescues and adoption programs throughout Ireland and the UK. Our two main purposes are to promote greyhounds and sighthounds as pets, and to find places of safety for greyhounds in urgent need of help. RRGON makes a clear distinction between placement and adoption, and only attempts placement of the dogs it handles so that more dogs in need can be helped. Placement indicates greyhounds removed from bad circumstances and relocated with a reputable adoption program, most of the time in the UK. Although we rarely are able to find a permanent home for dogs we rescue, many of our dogs often are adopted shortly after finding placement. While we still have them in our care, however, we generally vaccinate, spay or neuter, worm, deflea and in general clean up a dog before sending it onwards. This would not be possible without the help of Dogs Trust in Ireland. Ir is not possible to give an exact figure for the number of greyhounds and part-greyhounds we have helped in 2007, though the number has to be close to 90, with at least half of them tattooed greyhounds. Placing a dog is complex, costly and time-consuming, from actually removing it from its situation, to finding temporary space for it in Ireland, to arrange for payment of vaccinations and other treatment (worming, de-fleaing, skin problems, injuries, etc), neutering costs, a place for the dog in the UK, transport of the dog to the ferry or a pickup point, and payment of transport. To ensure a safe trip, we only transport our dogs through private cars or one of two transporters. Whatever costs are not picked up by Dogs Trust are paid for out of our own pockets. We do not solicit for monetary donations, but will accept such a donation if offered. Donations and help do not always have to be in the form of money, and any contribution of coats, martingale collars, leashes, slip leads, blankets, basic medical and grooming supplies, and dog beds are very deeply appreciated. If you live in Ireland or the UK and want to help out and be part of the network, then please email us at rescuedgreyhounds@eircom.net Part of the success of the network is that we all find ways to regularly help each other out, and so let us know in what way you need help and also are able to help.
