If you can't adopt a
greyhound, there are a lot of ways in which you can help greyhounds anyway. From
visiting adoption programs and helping them with socialization and basic care
and exercise, to collecting bedding, food and other donations, all rescue and
adoption programs appreciate an extra hand. The more a greyhound in an adoption
program is handled and socialized, the more likely they are to be successfully
and permanently homed, and you can make your own efforts part of that dog's
success story.
Some rescue and adoption programs have a fostering system set up, where they
supply all the food and medical needs, and you provide the dog with a temporary
home environment. For example, if you cannot adopt because you travel too much,
you still might be able to take a greyhound into your home temporarily. This
could be helping a program with overflow until an anticipated space for the dog
becomes available at their own facility, or taking in a poorly dog who is not
well enough to be in a kennel environment. No matter what the circumstances
might be, however, you and the program involved must decide AHEAD OF TIME
exactly what the arrangements are, in particular the length of the dog's stay as
well as costs.
The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary is always happy to receive donations of bedding,
food, and rawhide chew treats for the residents! Oat porridge flakes, cider
vinegar, sunflower oil and sardines are also constantly running out. Simple 6
foot long (2 meter) leashes are also handy, as are "martingale"
greyhound collars. Anything offered is gladly accepted and very much
appreciated!
