Greyhounds as Pets
For the last several decades, greyhounds have been welcomed into homes as pets and companion dogs all over the world, from Australia to South Africa, and North America to all the countries in the EU. They have proven to be intelligent, affectionate, loyal, clean and easy-to-keep pets who want little more than a comfortable place to sleep and human companionship. It is only in Ireland where greyhounds are perceived as unsuitable as pets, and this is due to myths about them as vicious, nervous, and generally un-trainable dogs. Myths die hard, however, and in spite of the fact that tiny Ireland produces more greyhounds annually than any other country in the world (though it is on par with the United States), it is a country where finding suitable homes for pet greyhounds is close to impossible. This is all due to misperceptions about greyhounds.
Anyone interested in adopting a greyhound from The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary will be welcome to contact the owners of other greyhounds already adopted from the sanctuary in order to discuss them as pets.
Dogs from here have gone to homes with small children, small dogs, cats, livestock, and more. We are all interested in smashing this old myth to pieces, and so invite potential owners to make their own inquiries. Rather than relying on the opinions of someone who has never had a greyhound as a pet, speaking to someone who is actually living with one as a family member will offer a more informed picture.
